Dori Lyon, Founder and Product Designer at Rain City Slickers
I have lived in Portland, Oregon since 1996 so I have grown attached to rain, all sorts of rain. When my husband and I produced a dog, and yes, I meant produced, since she is our fur kid and pouts just like me; I started walking everyday. What I noticed was that even when wearing my raincoat, and rain boots, my legs were always wet. I tried to hold an umbrella while walking her but that was annoying. When I got home I would throw my pants in the drier which sometimes made me late to work. Waiting for the pants to dry was an added step to my day that I was tired of.
Then one day, it hit me. I needed a rain skirt. I searched the web and found rain skirts, but most looked like ugly curtains and did not appeal to me. Then I thought, what if I made a clear rain skirt. I could still look cute even in the rain. Then that took me to where I am today. My sister helped me make the first prototype skirt, and then a good friend helped me perfect the skirt. Now, I have an assistant designer, Gii, who has been essential in cutting the skirts, and making them more functional. I have a wonderful seamstress, Jeanette, who has been patient with all of the changes, and has added her design touches to the skirts.
Then I decided to not stop at just the rain skirt. I wanted to make customized bridal skirts since so many weddings in Portland have a guest called Rain who just shows up unexpectedly. So from here on, I am continuing to design rain skirts, and customized bridal rain skirts. I have other clothing options coming up in the fall. Rain City Slickers is the beginning of bad ass and sexy rain gear for women.
And, as I always say, no more dumpy rain coats in the Spring, I now have a clear rain skirt that I can just throw on with a cute rain jacket. No more umbrellas...afterall this is Portland, and umbrellas don’t get along with the Gorge Winds.
